Victoria Generals Split Doubleheader at Riverside

Victoria Generals

As the saying goes, you win some, you lose some, and that was indeed the case last night for the Victoria Generals who did exactly that in a doubleheader vs. the Texas Marshals.

The Generals won game one 8-1 and the Marshals took game two 2-1.

The Generals received a solid outing from starting pitcher J.P. Clifton in game one as he picked up his first win of the season.  Clifton allowed just one run in five innings on five hits with five strikeouts.

Kris Looper pitched the final two innings for the Generals without allowing a run and striking out three to secure the game one win.

The Generals grabbed a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning.  After back-to-back singles by Alvaro Rondon and Hayden Vesely to start the inning, Romeo Cortina lifted a sacrifice fly into left field.  Jordan Camel then drilled an RBI triple over the centerfielder’s head.

The Marshals cut the Generals lead to 2-1 in the third inning on a Taylor Munden RBI single to score Connor Costello.

The Generals then extended the lead to 8-1 with a six-run fifth inning.  Camel came through again with a two-run single to score Vesely and Cortina.  Frank Cloutier delivered a two-run single of his own later in the inning to score Camel and J.D. Stinnett.  Cloutier came into score on a wild pitch.  Jace Reese then scored on an RBI ground out by Rondon.

The game one win broke the Generals five-game losing streak.  Camel led the way going 2-for-3 in the game with three RBI and a run scored.

The Generals struggled to get anything going against Marshal’s game two starting pitcher Nick Palacios.  Palacios allowed just two hits and struck out seven in six innings to pick up the win.

The Marshals scored a run in the first inning to take a 1-0 lead on a Taylor Munden RBI ground out off of Generals starting pitcher Kaleb Keith.

Munden scored in the top of the fourth inning on a Chabrielle Pizzarro groundout to give the Marshals a 2-0 advantage.

Keith allowed just the two runs on two hits with three strikeouts in four innings.  Keith was making his first start of the summer for the Generals after severing as the primary closer for most of the season.

Andrew Walker, Argenis Argulo, and Tyler Schnuriger each pitched a scoreless inning in the game.

The Generals cut the Marshals lead to 2-1 in the bottom of the seventh inning as Jordan Camel singled to get things started and scored on a single by Jacob Hubert and an error by the Marshals third baseman.

Brandon Hannon singled and stole second base to put the winning in scoring position.  After a walk to Rondon to load the bases with no outs, Vesely and Cortina each struck out back-to-back.  Stinnett then flew out to the first baseman in foul territory to end the game.

Tyler Parmenter picked up the save for the Marshals as they held on for the 2-1 win.

With the split, the Generals are now 23-26 overall and 6-13 in the second-half.  The Marshals are now 17-33 on the season and 8-12 in the second-half.

The Generals have an off-day today before traveling to Lafayette, Louisiana for a two-game series with the Acadiana Cane Cutters on Tuesday and Wednesday nights.

Go Generals!
