That Navarro Traffic is Getting Pretty Crazy [VIDEO]

Oh, the growing pains of a growing city. Hailing from a major metropolis, I'm very familiar with traffic congestion. Anybody who's driven in Houston, San Antonio or Austin knows the joys. It's almost getting to be that bad here in Victoria, especially at certain times when driving near the mall. I'm really happy about the overpasses now open on Loop 463, but I bet it won't be too long before we're wishing they had made it 4 lanes on each side.

Okay, I can see by the criteria we may not have all the things that make what was among the best, but we do have a lot going for us, like low unemployment, growing industry, and other factors. 9 Inches of Rain, but the Drought's Not Over

It's been pretty wet in the Crossroads so far this year with official tallies showing as much as 9 inches in some areas on Wednesday. Honestly, I have no idea about the drought, it just seems like every year when we get some rain, the first thing you hear is "the drought's not over." Again, I'm no expert, but I'd say we are not in a drought at the moment.

Other rainfall reports said there was 9 inched in Jackson and DeWitt Counties, and Inez registering 7 inches. At Calhoun County Airport, officials listed right around 3 1/2 inches of rainfall. No significant problems were reported from the rainfall, but minor river flooding is expected.

If you drive regularly around the Victoria area, you know we do have our share of traffic problems. From idiots who try to make turns out of the wrong lane, and inconsiderate drivers that seem to think they’re the only one on the road, to road construction, and more traffic than the road can handle, especially around Victoria Mall. If you’ve ever driven in a large city, you also know our problems are nothing compared to other cities. According to a new study, drivers in the 10 worst cities for traffic spend anywhere from 30 to 58 hours a year trapped in their cars going exactly nowhere.

Victoria Makes Top 10 for Historic Preservation

Victoria certainly has a lot of history, and the pride shows everywhere you go. Just drive around on the historic homes tour, or take a look at some of the downtown businesses. According to the website Livability.com, the city ranks 10th for U.S. cities in historic preservation. The site calls itself "a comprehensive online resource on more than 500 of America's Best Places to live, visit, work, play and explore." Programs like the city's Main Street Program, along with museums and it's 113 registered historic properties were cited as factors for the ranking. See the complete top 10 below.

How Does Texas Rank on Minimum Wage?

Everything increases, right? Prices rise, and hopefully wages also go up to keep pace. I can remember when the minimum wage was $4 an hour, and we would get all excited because it was going to rise to $4.25. Of course at the time, I think we were paying 49 cents for a gallon of gas. Living in Victoria, Texas with teenagers about to enter the workforce, it’s nice to see that our state is at least at the federal level of $7.25 an hour. How does that compare with the rest of the United States? Check out the highest and the lowest, according to ABC News.

Everything's bigger in Texas, that goes without saying. That's also true economically speaking. Our state has fared far better than most of the rest of the country during the recession, and that kind of news is always great to hear. Just seeing all the growth around Victoria is reassuring, because it means more jobs, and better opportunity for everybody. When it comes to air pollution, I'd say we're pretty lucky in Victoria. First of all, the air is pretty clean, despite the fact that we have plants and oil in the area. It's also good to kn ow we have organizations like Air Victoria that work to make sure our air stays clean. Meanwhile, in other parts of the country, life is not so sweet. The American Lung Association recently released a new report of the cities with the cleanest and dirtiest air and (surprise!) five California cities topped the “dirtiest cities” list. Of course, California might be clogged with more smoke than Don Draper’s lungs, but it’s not the only dirty place in America. Here are some ways to tell if your corner of the country could use a lot of Febreze.

They Live-Victoria Edition [VIDEO]

Back in 1988 there was a pretty cool sci-fi flick called They Live. It was done by John Carpenter, who can put together a decent horror movie, and the concept was pretty good. Even Roddy Piper wasn't too bad in it. The concept of the movie is that aliens have taken over the planet without our knowledge, and you need special glasses to actually see who they are. While checking out a video on You Tube, I ran across this part of the movie that You Tube user jesubub doctored in a few spots to refer to Victoria, which is interesting. Check it out.
