Whether its an accident, a surgery, or some other medical reason, the need for blood donations is ongoing, especially here in south Texas, where the South Texas Blood and Tissue Center provides blood and its components to 100 hospitals and clinics in 43 counties. That's why the City of Victoria has scheduled a drive next week.

It's a day designated around the globe to encourage people from all nations to donate blood, and our own South Texas Blood & Tissue Center has a number of different blood drives scheduled around Victoria.

Donating blood is something that can easily be taken for granted. A single donation can save multiple lives, and it's something that is a constant need in South Texas.  Giving blood is also good for your health. It only takes about 30  minutes, and when your body replenishes it's blood cell supply, it removes iron, which at high levels can contribute to heart disease. Your body also will produce new, stronger,  healthy blood cells. You also get a mini physical, which can give you important information about your health. So celebrate World Blood Donor Day at one of the many blood drive locations listed below.

Gina Walker needed blood transfusions of 540 units of blood and blood products, which amounts to about 35 gallons of blood. Needless to say, that is huge. It reminded me of how important it is to the area that we have the South Texas Blood & Tissue Center here in Victoria, and how much they mean to the community.
