Ryanair Boss Admits You Don’t Really Need a Seat Belt on an Airplane

Have you ever wondered exactly how wearing a seat belt is beneficial to your safety when traveling by airplane? Apparently, you are not alone. Budget airliner Ryanair is currently trying to implement a “standing room only” cabin for its passengers, allowing them to travel without any restraints.

According to Michael O’Leary, the chief executive of Ryanair, the idea that a seat belt is considered safety equipment aboard an airplane is ridiculous. “If there ever was a crash on an aircraft, God forbid, a seat belt won’t save you.” he said.

And with O’Leary’s philosophy comes some new ideas in the realm of air travel for Ryanair. The airline wants permission to sell tickets for $2 to students and budget-conscious travellers just looking to get from point A to point B. To do this, O’Leary is suggesting the removal of the back 10 rows of seats on all of their airplanes.

“If you say to passengers it’s $40 for the seat and $2 for the standing cabin, I guarantee we will sell the standing cabin first,” said O’Leary. “No question.”

However, the proposed “standing cabin” is currently a no-go in the eyes of European safety regulators, whom O’Leary describes as “a bunch of plonkers.” (Note: a plonker is British slang for moron.)

As of now, there is no word whether O’Leary’s vision of selling spots in a standing cabin will come to fruition.
