More and more parents are using Facebook to spy on their kids, but one Ohio mother has taken it to the next level by using the social media site to shame her disrespectful daughter, and it’s drawing some heated criticism.

Denise Abbott was fed up with her 13-year-old daughter, Ava, mouthing off to her. So she went into Ava’s Facebook account and replaced her profile photo with one depicting Ava with a red X over her mouth and the words, “I do not know how to keep my [mouth shut]. I am no longer allowed on Facebook or my phone. Please ask why. My mom says I have to answer everyone that asks.”

As for the punishment itself, Denise explained, “I decided to do something that I know would totally impact her … so that the next time she started [mouthing off], she’d think ‘I don’t want my face all over Facebook again with a red ‘X’ over my mouth.”’

Critics have gone so far as to call it “child abuse,” and the ladies on ‘The View’ even had a heated exchange about it. But in an email to reporters, Ava seemed contrite, saying, “I feel like I deserved it because I was mean to my mom and spoke disrespectful to her in front of my friends … I told the people that asked me and my mom why that I spoke to my mom mean when she was doing nice stuff for me and my friends. I know my mom always makes sure I don’t get away with stuff like that and I was sorry.”
