Joe Perry on Aerosmith: ‘I Have No Idea How it Works’

Steven Tyler and Joe Perry‘s relationship is one of rock’s great wonders, but the pair have managed to pull it together once again in time for Aerosmith to release new music and tour this summer. When asked about the oft-contentious relationship, Perry tells the Boston Herald he’s as puzzled as fans and critics.

“I have no idea how it works,” the guitarist says in a recent interview. “With Aerosmith, we put one foot in front of the other and hope for the best.” Both men take responsibility for the public arguing and name-calling, but Tyler doesn’t seem surprised that after ten years he and Perry were able to put aside their differences to write music for ‘Music From Another Dimension.’ He says their working relationship is like fine wine.

“It’s the same bottle man,” Tyler says, “we just corked it. Everything that was cooking inside and fermenting to that just right year just happened to be now. It was the perfect time.”

Many of the songs on the new album — in stores Aug. 28 — are a decade in the making. Perry says some of the riffs were written in 2002, not long after releasing ‘Just Push Play,’ their last album of new material. New music is critical to their survival.

“There are bands that don’t talk to each other for five years, and then get back together and go out and play their songs and they turn into the best cover band of their own songs,” Perry says. “That’s fine and well, but for us it will be always changing. We’ve been trying to write this record for 10 years, and we finally did.”

As for the in-fighting. It seems that after every calm comes another storm, but that’s a good thing. “With great pressure comes great diamonds,” Tyler says.
