Chalk up another win for the Victoria Generals last night, as the team bested the East Texas Pumpjacks 9-5 last night, completing a sweep in the 2-game series.

 

With the help of Pump Jacks starting pitcher Ben Mordini,The Generals jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning, when Pumpjacks starting pitcher Ben Mordini walked Frank Cloutier and then threw an errant pickoff attempt into right-field to allow him to advance to third. Cloutier then came into score on a balk.  J.B. Moss was walked, stole second base, and advanced to third on another balk, before coming in to score on a passed ball. David Paiz, Jr. was hit by a pitch and advanced to third on Mordini’s third walk of the game, this one to Kyle Thornell.  After a pitching change, Jordan Camel lifted a sacrifice fly into right field to score Paiz.  All three runs in the inning came without recording a hit.

The Pump Jacks and Generals traded runs in the second inning to make it 4-1.  Drew Featherston doubled and came into score on an error by the Pump Jacks first baseman.

The Pump Jacks scored single runs in the third and sixth innings to cut the deficit to 4-3.  Then the Generals turned up the hits in the home half of the sixth,  with five runs to make it 9-3.  Featherston got the scoring started with a two-run single to score Brett Hoffman and J.D. Stinnett.  After loading the bases, Jacob Hubert smashed a triple to the left-centerfield wall to drive in Cloutier, Moss, and Featherston.  Hubert leads the TCL with 22 RBIs.

The Pump Jacks added single runs in the seventh and eighth, but were unable to mount a rally in the ninth as the Generals won the game 9-5.

Matt McClain picked up his second win of the season, allowing just two runs in five innings on four hits with six strikeouts.  Nathan Humpal picked up his first save of the year, tossing the final three innings of the game.  Humpal allowed two runs on six hits with two strikeouts.

Featherston led the Generals offense, going 3-for-4 on the night with a double, two RBIs, two runs scored, and three stolen bases.

With the win, the Generals improve to 13-5 on the season and the Pump Jacks fall to 6-11.

The Generals will host the Brazos Valley Bombers in the first game of a two-game series on tonight at 7:05pm at Riverside Stadium.  It will be the first matchup between the two teams this season.  The Bombers currently hold the best record in the league at 15-3 and are ranked as the #2 summer ball team in the nation,  according to the inaugural poll of the 2013 season released by Perfect Game Crosschecker.

It's also the Generals first Thirsty Thursday of the season.  Draft beer will be $1 all game long on the Beef ‘O’ Brady’s Party Deck.  There will be a TV on the party deck televising game seven of the NBA Finals between the San Antonio Spurs and Miami Heat.
