The Fourth of July is about more than just fireworks and hot dogs.

When our Founding Fathers got together on that fateful day in 1776 to ratify the Declaration of Independence they were forwarding some ideas about government and democracy that were pretty radical at the time.

One of the central tenants of the Declaration of Independence is that “governments derive their only just powers from the consent of the governed.” A recent Rasmussen Report survey of 1,000 American adults asked if they agree or disagree with that famous statement from 236 years ago.

Seventy percent of the poll’s respondents said that they agreed. This is up from the 66 percent who agreed when the same question was asked last year, and the 58 percent who agreed in 2008.
