On the idea of the campaign itself, I reserved judgment when it was first unveiled. Not being a marketer myself, I was willing to sit back and let it all unfold. Then one day I was watching Channel 15 and saw the full-blown presentation. Until that point, I was unaware that the campaign was ACTUALLY GOING TO BE ABOUT BOOTS! I thought it was just a catchy little thing to grab one’s attention. Once that hit me in the face like a blast of cold water, I was even more confused than before.

The bottom line is that I wish Ms. Bise the best. Unlike some others, I have not chosen to bash her. The whole thing just seems a bit “off” to me. Perhaps she possesses an exponentially higher amount of knowledge in these matters than the sum of the collective. For the sake of $1.5 million in taxpayer money and counting, I sure hope so.

Also notice that he completely ignored my DIRECT question to offer proof and support his claim that Gary Burns has “purposeful benefit relative to your position”, since he STILL thinks I am Gary Burns.

I can relate to your skepticism of the lack of potential effectiveness of the “Bring Your Boots” campaign while sharing your hope & love for our community. One’s opinion of the merits of local government initiatives and one’s regard for the community should be mutually-exclusive concepts, but in typical jackboot fashion, you’re cast as a witless complainer or “hater” if you express disapproval of the establishment. The City is being run by people who think all things must begin & end with government, but I think our potential lies in the wills & imaginations of our people & businesses.

I’ve spoken to several small business owners who think the method of taxing hotel customers to fund the CVB is counter-productive and detrimental to our economy because a large portion of hotel customers are here on business. Why would we institute a unique tax on people coming into town on business only to use that money to attract tourists, despite whatever it may yield for the tourism industry? Doesn’t that seem like a covert way of taking from all businesses to benefit a narrow, non-productive “tourist economy” that would only fluff the service industry and their low-paying jobs?

To put it simply, there’s no way this campaign should’ve received $1.5M, and I’m afraid they’ll keep pumping cash into it. I want to see our money stay in the hands of the most productive parts of the economy, and government only sucks productivity out of our dollars when they go beyond what we expect from them.

We need more folks like you to make it OK to voice a dissenting opinion without fear of retribution from employers or the taxman. Thanks for soliciting our opinions.
