Battle of the Badges Game Rescheduled For This Sunday

Has the Battle of the Badges kickball game been rescheduled?

Yes! The game was originally scheduled for Sept. 15, but rain received in the days before the game left the field soggy and not playable.

Battle of the Badges will be at 7 p.m. Oct. 28, at Rosebud Stadium in Riverside Park, home of the Victoria Generals.

Battle of the Badges is more than just a fun rivalry between the police and fire departments - the event kicks off the city's United Way campaign each year and serves as a fundraiser that benefits United Way partner organizations in Victoria County. United Way's mission is to provide community resources for the common good where all individuals can achieve their potential though education, income stability and healthy lives.

Last year, the Victoria County United Way raised $620,000, and 17 United Way agencies were awarded grants. United Way-funded agencies aided an estimated 50,000 from Victoria and surrounding counties.

If you are looking for something fun to do on a Sunday evening that will help others in our community who are in need, please plan to join us Oct. 28 for Battle of the Badges and cheer on your favorite team. There will be plenty of food, drinks, live music and games for the kids. Admission is only $5 per person and kids 12 and under are admitted free of charge.

Come out and see if the police department will break the fire department's winning streak and take home the coveted Battle of the Badges trophy. The game is sponsored by Citizen's Medical Center, Sam's Club, H-E-B, the Victoria Generals, the Victoria County United Way and the Victoria Parks and Recreation Department.

Does the city of Victoria Fire Department take part in National Fire Prevention Week?

Yes, the Fire Department hosts a city and countywide Fire Prevention Poster Contest each year.

The department also visits schools and talks with students about planning an escape route if a fire were to happen in their home. They are also educated about "stop, drop and roll."

This year, National Fire Prevention Week was observed Oct. 7-13. The fire department judged hundreds of posters created by students in first through fifth grades. The following students were named as first-place winners of the contest for their schools:•  First grade - Jayden Flores, O'Connor Elementary School

•  Second grade - Noah Serrano, Torres Elementary School

•  Third grade - Cason Jander, Trinity Episcopal School

•  Fourth grade - Vivian Doan, Trinity Episcopal School

•  Fifth grade - Zeke Jackson, Dudley Elementary School

Winners received a trophy and a $100 Wal-Mart gift card. Contest sponsors were Victoria Fire and Safety, Rosewood Funeral Home and Citgo.

The winning posters will be on display through Monday at the Victoria Mall.
