Thirty Seconds to Mars have built a reputation for creating some of the most compelling music videos of the modern era so it may surprise some fans to see the beauty in the simplicity of their new lyric video for ‘City of Angels.’

From their latest conceptual disc ‘Love Lust Faith + Dreams’ released in May, ‘City of Angels’ tells a passionate tale of finding comfort in calling the city of Los Angeles home.

In the video, a silhouette of Thirty Seconds to Mars frontman Jared Leto is cast against the sun setting over the city as the lyrics play out in front of him, “The silver of a lake at night / The hills of Hollywood on fire / A boulevard of hope and dreams / Streets made of desire.

The lyrics pour out over the scene as Leto’s silhouette moves against the beautiful landscape behind him. At moments he appears as if he’s conducting the song from high atop the Hollywood Hills.

The lyric video for ‘City of Angels’ serves as only a precursor to the official video for the song though, directed by Bartholomew Cubbins, also known as Jared Leto. The official video will be another short film, much like the shorts released for ‘From Yesterday, ‘Hurricane’ and ‘Up in the Air.’ Check out the lyric video for 'City of Angels' above.

Meanwhile, 30STM took home the trophy for Best Rock Video for 'Up in the Air' at last night's MTV Video Music Awards. The band kicks off a headlining tour on Sept. 27 in Atlanta. Check out the list of dates here.
